TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin held separate meetings with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan on Thursday, June 18.
In talks with Anutin, the two leaders agreed to expand cooperation in trade, energy and security, according to a Thai Enquirer report, as quoted by ANTARA. The discussion also highlighted the impact of tensions in the Middle East on global energy security and global supply chains.
Thailand welcomes Russia's support for developing cooperation in the clean energy, liquefied natural gas (LNG), petrochemicals and fertilizer sectors. Both sides also supported the continuation of free trade agreement negotiations between Thailand and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Additionally, the two countries discussed potential areas of cooperation, including defense, public health, science, technology, education, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the eradication of online fraud.
The two leaders also agreed to strengthen tourism and cultural exchanges ahead of the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Anutin said nearly two million Russian tourists would visit Thailand throughout 2025.
In separate meetings, Wong and Putin reviewed bilateral relations and regional cooperation. Following the meeting, Wong reiterated Singapore's position on Ukraine in a post on social media platform X. He said Singapore's position was based on the belief that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected.
Wong also met with the leader of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov on his first visit to Kazan. In a post on X, he said Minnikhanov recalled his meeting with Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and the friendship he had forged with Singaporeans over the years.
Wong added that this reflects the long-standing relationship between Singapore and the Republic within the Russian Federation.
According to data from the Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, trade between the two countries was approximately US$1.5 billion.
Meanwhile, Singapore remains one of Russia's largest trading partners in Southeast Asia, with bilateral trade exceeding US$4 billion in recent years, according to data from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and the Singaporean government.
