Indonesia Calls for ASEAN Unity Through Amity, Cooperation Treaty

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono urges the acceleration of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in Cebu, Philippines, on Thursday.

In a written statement received in Jakarta on Thursday, Sugiono calls for ASEAN to be more coordinated in promoting stronger internal cohesion and more impactful external engagement in addressing the current geopolitical situation.

"In an increasingly volatile world, ASEAN remains a trusted, stable, and reliable partner, as demonstrated by the increasing number of accessions to the TAC. We must also accelerate the process because it is very clear that ASEAN is trusted by our external partners," said Sugiono.

According to him, the TAC is a push to strengthen cooperation with member states on various shared interests while increasing its relevance.

In this context, ASEAN's inclusive approach remains key to encouraging more constructive external engagement.

Regarding the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), Sugiono stated that ASEAN requires a more holistic approach to the moratorium on dialogue partners and reaffirmed Indonesia's support for Turkey's potential to become a full dialogue partner.

The Philippines will host the 2026 ASEAN Summit and related meetings under the theme "Navigating Our Future, Together."

Ahead of the 48th ASEAN Summit on Friday, May 8, a series of ministerial-level meetings were held on Thursday, including the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and the 31st Meeting of the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council.

ASEAN is also commemorating the 50th anniversary of the peace treaty this year, marking five decades of regional peace, stability, and cooperation. To date, 57 countries have signed the ASEAN TAC, with Algeria and Uruguay signing the treaty in 2025.
