Iran Urges UN to Reject US Resolution on Strait of Hormuz

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iran has called on members of the United Nations Security Council to reject the United States' draft resolution regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran views the Washington proposal as politically motivated and potentially legitimizing actions that violate international law.

"Iran called on member states 'to act not under pressure, but on the basis of logic, justice and principles,' reject the draft resolution and refrain from supporting it," said Iran's representative to the UN in a statement on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.

According to Iran, a permanent solution to the tension in the Strait of Hormuz can only be achieved through cessation of hostilities, lifting the sea blockade, and restoration of international shipping lanes.

Teheran accuses the U.S. of using the issue of freedom of navigation to further its political agenda. Iran claims that the draft resolution is not aimed at resolving the crisis but rather justifying actions deemed illegitimate.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, that Washington has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council. The resolution urges Iran to cease attacks, mine-laying, and levying fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Rubio mentioned that the language in the draft has been simplified to make it more acceptable to Security Council members.

Back in April, the Security Council failed to pass a similar draft resolution after being vetoed by Russia and China. Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, stated that Moscow refused to support the document, which was deemed capable of establishing a dangerous precedent in international law.

Nebenzia considered the content of the draft resolution to be unbalanced, confrontational, and potentially grounds for specific countries to justify the use of force.
