TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For the past month, Yohan Hendratmoko has twice been invited to attend meetings held by a task force led by Hashim Djojohadikusumo in Jakarta. The head of Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan was among 13 representatives from national park offices asked to join the meetings in a hybrid format. "The first meeting was around two weeks ago, or at the end of April 2026," Yohan told Tempo on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
The large gathering was convened shortly after President Prabowo Subianto signed Presidential Decree No. 8/2026 on the National Park Management Financing Innovation Task Force on April 16. Prabowo appointed his younger brother, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who also serves as the President's Special Envoy for Energy and Climate, as chairperson of the team.
Before Hashim and members of the National Park Task Force, Yohan delivered an online presentation outlining the management needs of Tanjung Puting National Park. The forestry graduate of IPB University in West Java, explained that the State Budget allocation for managing the park amounted to only Rp17 billion (about US$1 million) annually. "Most of it goes toward employee salaries and benefits as well as office operational activities, such as electricity costs and the like," he said.
Spending on patrols across the park's 415,040-hectare landscape, he added, remains severely limited. That does not even include budgets for community empowerment, tourism development, orangutan conservation, and the prevention of forest and peatland fires. All of those activities, he said, have thus far been fully supported through funding from the philanthropic organizations Orangutan Foundation International and Orangutan Foundation United Kingdom.
