Fact Check: Building Collapse Video Misidentified as Venezuela Earthquake Footage

3 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A video is circulating on Facebook [archive] claiming that a collapsed building in Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, was caused by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake. The footage shows a tall building tilting to the left before collapsing. A man in a white shirt can be seen running away. Is it true that the building in the video was destroyed by the earthquake in Venezuela?

FACT CHECK

Tempo Fact Check team verified the narrative using reverse image search techniques, geolocation tracking, and comparisons with credible sources. The results showed that the video depicts an earthquake in Turkey on February 6, 2023, not a disaster in Venezuela in 2026.

A video of the collapsed building had been circulating online long before the earthquake struck Venezuela. Similar documentation was published by Turkish news portals such as Iha.com, Karar.com, and the YouTube channel Aksu Haber.

The building in the video is a 15-story apartment building located in Bati Sehir Park, Ungut, Oniki Subat District, Turkey. The building initially remained standing despite being severely damaged by the powerful earthquake on February 6, 2023, centered in Kahramanmaras. However, on October 1, 2023, the building suddenly collapsed toward the front just as residents were about to begin demolition.

Tempo tracked the building's location using Google Street View. By matching image elements from the 2022 documentation, it was confirmed that the collapsed building was located on the far left of the row of apartments in the Bati Sehir Park complex.

Venezuela Earthquake Impact

Although the circulating video is misrepresented, a real earthquake struck Venezuela, causing extensive damage. The Associated Press reports that the disaster killed at least 235 people and injured 4,300.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reports that around 51,000 people are missing. Coastal areas such as the cities of Macuto and Caraballeda have suffered the most extensive damage.

CONCLUSION

After conducting a fact-check, Tempo concluded that the claim in the video that a building collapsed due to the 2026 Venezuelan earthquake is false. The video clip in question was of a building being demolished after the 2023 earthquake in Turkey.
