TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japanese biopharmaceutical company Takeda will invest up to US$30 million (around Rp539 billion) to help develop Indonesia's plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMP) industry.
The investment, announced by the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), will be used during an initial two-year phase to establish a network of plasma banks, laying the groundwork for Indonesia's domestic plasma industry.
Investment Minister and BKPM head Rosan Roeslani said the move signals growing confidence among global investors in Indonesia's healthcare sector and broader economic prospects.
"This strategic investment not only brings capital but also opens opportunities for technology transfer, human resource development, and the creation of highly skilled jobs," Rosan said in a statement on Tuesday.
He said the government is seeking investments that generate greater added value and bolster Indonesia's industrial capabilities, with the long-term goal of turning the country into a regional center for healthcare manufacturing and innovation.
The partnership also aligns with Indonesia's downstream industrialization agenda, which has expanded beyond mining and natural resources to include strategic sectors such as healthcare.
Japan remains one of Indonesia's largest foreign investors. BKPM data showed Japanese investment reached US$1 billion in the first quarter of 2026, making Japan the country's fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment during the period.
Between 2021 and the first quarter of 2026, Japanese investment in Indonesia totaled US$18.1 billion, growing at an average rate of 13.2 percent and generating nearly 300,000 jobs.
Rosan said the strong investment ties between Indonesia and Japan provide a solid basis for expanding cooperation in priority sectors, including healthcare and biopharmaceuticals.
Through the collaboration with Takeda, Indonesia hopes to improve access to plasma-derived medicines while building a competitive and sustainable biopharmaceutical ecosystem.
The country's first plasma bank is expected to begin operations in 2027 as part of a nationwide network designed to meet international standards.
