TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia and India will work together to develop strategic ports in Sabang, Aceh, and India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of efforts to improve maritime connectivity and expand economic cooperation.
Speaking after talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, Prabowo said the ports would serve as strategic gateways linking Sabang Island with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, strengthening connectivity across the eastern Indian Ocean.
Indonesia also supports the development of port infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands alongside the expansion of Sabang Port, he said.
"I express Indonesia's support for the development of the port in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as the expansion and development of Sabang Port in Aceh as a strategic link between Sabang Island and India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands," Prabowo said.
He said better maritime links would help increase trade and investment while making travel between the two countries easier, paving the way for closer people-to-people exchanges.
Prabowo said Indonesia and India see economic cooperation as a key pillar of their bilateral relationship and agreed to expand collaboration in strategic sectors.
He added that the planned port developments are expected to strengthen the two countries' strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific.
"Both countries view economic cooperation as one of the main pillars of our bilateral relationship," Prabowo said.
