TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah reported that 20 Indonesian hajj pilgrims have died in Saudi Arabia as of Saturday, May 9, 2026, amid this year’s pilgrimage season.
“The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah extends its deepest condolences extends its deepest condolences and ensures that all rights of the deceased pilgrims are fulfilled in accordance with the established procedures,” ministry spokesperson Ichsan Marsha said in a written statement on Saturday.
As the 19th day of the 1447 Hijriah hajj operation approaches, the ministry recorded 170 pilgrims referred to the Indonesian Hajj Health Clinic (KKHI), while 352 others were referred to hospitals in Saudi Arabia. A total of 77 pilgrims are currently undergoing medical treatment.
Authorities continue to urge Indonesian pilgrims to maintain their health amid extreme temperatures ranging from 38 to 42 degrees Celsius in Medina and Mecca.
“We urge pilgrims to adjust their worship activities according to their physical condition, drink enough water, use protective gear, and immediately report any health problems,” Ichsan said.
Despite the health concerns, the overall hajj operation has been running smoothly, according to the ministry. As of May 8, a total of 303 flight groups carrying 117,452 pilgrims and 1,209 hajj officers had departed from Indonesia for Saudi Arabia.

In addition, 28 flight groups carrying 10,731 pilgrims and 113 officers from the second wave of departures have landed at King Abdulaziz International Airport.
Ichsan said the government continues to strengthen services to ensure pilgrims can focus on worship during their stay in Saudi Arabia.
“Our priority is to ensure that all Indonesian pilgrims receive the best possible services during their stay in Saudi Arabia, from comfortable accommodation and proper meals to organized transportation and responsive healthcare services,” he said.
The Indonesian Hajj Organizing Committee (PPIH) in Medina reported that 267 flight groups with 104,796 pilgrims have been accommodated in 94 hotels. Meanwhile, the Mecca working area has served 165 flight groups with 63,822 pilgrims staying across 180 hotels.
The ministry also reported that 2,782,118 meal boxes have been distributed to Indonesian pilgrims, including 2,129,003 in Medina and 653,115 in Mecca.
