TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the conflict with Iran is not over despite an ongoing U.S.-mediated ceasefire, arguing that Tehran still possesses highly enriched uranium that could potentially be used for nuclear weapons.
In an interview with CBS News broadcast on Sunday, May 11, 2026, Netanyahu said joint military operations by Israel and the United States had significantly weakened Iran’s nuclear capabilities, but said the campaign’s objectives had not yet been fully achieved.
“It’s not over because there’s still nuclear material – enriched uranium – that has to be taken out of Iran. There’s still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled,” Netanyahu said.
Iran’s Uranium Stockpile
Speaking on CBS News’ 60 Minutes, Netanyahu said Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities should be dismantled and its stockpile of highly enriched uranium removed from the country.
“Now, we've degraded a lot of it,” Netanyahu said, referring to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, regional proxy network, and missile production capabilities. “But all that is still there, and there's work to be done.”
When asked how the uranium would be removed, Netanyahu replied, “You go in, and you take it out.”
He added that a negotiated agreement with Iran would be “the best way” to ensure the removal of the material.
Peace Talks Face Obstacles
According to a report by TRT World, Netanyahu said Israel and the United States aim to dismantle Iran’s uranium enrichment infrastructure and prevent Tehran from rebuilding its missile network and allied armed groups in the region.
He declined to elaborate on what would happen if an agreement was not reached with Iran regarding its nuclear material.
“I'm not going to give a timetable to it, but I'm going to say that's a terrifically important mission,” Netanyahu said.
Israeli media reported on Saturday that U.S. President Donald Trump assured Netanyahu that Washington would maintain its position on Iran’s uranium stockpile during negotiations.
Meanwhile, Iran responded on Sunday to the latest U.S. peace proposal by demanding compensation from Washington and reaffirming its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran rejected the proposal, saying it imposed excessive demands and failed to address what it described as the Iranian people’s fundamental rights.
