TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts light to moderate rain in most major cities in western Indonesia on Friday, July 3, 2026.
BMKG forecaster Sastia, as quoted by ANTARA, said that this condition is triggered by increased rain cloud growth due to active atmospheric dynamics in the western regions of the archipelago. "Light rain is predicted to occur in most parts of Sumatra, Palangka Raya, and Samarinda," she said.
Sastia urged the public to be wary of the potential for extreme weather, such as heavy rain accompanied by lightning, in several urban areas on the island of Kalimantan.
According to weather analysis data, residents in the cities of Banjarmasin and Tanjung Selor should anticipate the potential for intense thunderstorms throughout the day.
The wet weather in western Indonesia is strongly influenced by a cyclonic circulation that is currently active in the western Indian Ocean off West Sumatra.
This circulation system creates a convergence zone off the coasts of North and West Sumatra, as well as in the North Natuna Sea and South China Sea.
Although rain is predicted to shower most of the western regions, BMKG notes that partly cloudy to overcast skies still have the potential to cover the cities of Banda Aceh, Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya.
Meanwhile, a slightly different weather phenomenon is expected in the downstream areas of Yogyakarta. The city's air may be shrouded in thin smoke or haze.
As for the potential for moderate rain, it is being monitored in the city of Nabire, while partly cloudy to overcast skies are expected in Denpasar, Kupang, Makassar, Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, and Merauke.
To anticipate sudden weather changes in urban areas, the BMKG urges the public to regularly check its official digital platforms or social media for the latest weather information.
